Asda are doing well with their progress on the sustainability agenda, recognising that the world has changed, with green being the new normal for many, many people. Julian Palin-Walker, Head of Corporate Sustainability at Asda, says “For public policy this means that less effort should be spent on convincing people to be green and more expended on helping them to be green. To guide this they gave us five areas of focus:

  • Green Is Normal – the new weird is doing nothing
  • I set the sustainability agenda – people want to set their own agenda
  • Green should be easier to find – make it easier to find the greener products and services
  • I expect to be greener in the future – green is here to stay and growing
  • The green choice shouldn’t cost more – don’t charge premiums on greener products”

On the back of this recognition, Asda are focusing on five priorities to meet the need of their customers:

  1. Save me money
  2. 100% sustainable products
  3. Cut my waste
  4. Support my community
  5. Use Everyday Experts

The model that they’re working with is still the old one, with supermarkets (whoever they are) still displacing local businesses. A new hybrid model is needed, that relocalises energy and food to secure the base of the pyramid, and uses the powerful distribution systems of the multiple retailers to eliminate negative impact of other household products that cannot practically be localised.
